Report from New Zealand National Championships by Gary Wilson
50th New Zealand Amateur & Professional Ballroom & Latin American Championships
22-23 July 2000
A Fifty year milestone championship was justifiably dedicated to the founder "JIMMY JAMES" of Wellington. Jimmy passed away a few years ago, but he would have been extremely proud of his niece Virginia Davies who gave the opening dedication which was then followed by a lively performance of "Greek" dancing by the "Hellenic Dancers" of Wellington.
Organisation by Mr. Peter Keen, Mr. Les Lloyd and Miss. Cheryl Stevens of the New Zealand Federation of Dance Teachers was once again superb. The support of a very hard working production team of floor manager, stewards, scrutineers, hosts, lighting technicians & security as well as physiotherapists & masseur made for a very successful championshiop at the "Indian Convention Centre" Wellington.
A negeative for this event was the small size of the competition dance floor and the very cramped table and seating arrangement. Costs for larger venues are extremely high and often need a special floor laid. However the Indian Centre provided a cosy atmosphere and with reduced numbers in each heat overcrowding was reduced a little.
Fabulous music provided by "Magic Dance Music" really set the scene for some good and not so good dancing.
When reviewing my notes and critques, I confirmed my impressions of far too many couples with the following problems
- Arms and Shoulders far to high (Standard)
- Distorted silhouettes (Standard & Latin)
- Not maintaining a vertical balance with the head over shoulders over hips over knees and feet (Standard)
- Body weight far too back and sitting (standard)
- Over choreographed programmes whereby the character of dances in Standard & Latin are lost amongst the picture high lights and poses
However enthusiasm and creativity was most evident as was pure enjoyument and love of dance. There is talent to burn and fitness levels were high. Couples did create good atmosphere in their dancing.
Being the 50th Jubilee something really special was needed and WOW!! did we get it in the form of international dancers Christopher Hawkins & Hazel Newberry.
Christopher Hawkins & Hazel Newberry.

We have witnessed many, many, fantastic dance shows & demonstrations. Last year we thought that Alan and Donna Shinglers effort was absolutely wonderful. Christopher & Hazels show was overwhelming and words fail me, "brilliant, creative, emotionally disturbing, fantastic, thrilling, ezpansive, crowd pleasing, sensitive moments, exciting" I could go on and on
Using their obvious balletic abilities combined with the ballroom dance of today and the courtly dance forms of over a century ago made for a varied show of Waltzes, Tango, Quirckstep and Foxtrot. The slow, slow, slow Foxtrot was one which held the audience "spellbound"
Notable performances during the Championships were,
- Brendan Cole & Camilla Dellerup (Christchurch/England)
1st in N.Z. Professional Latin
Brendan & Camilla's dancing was eagerly awaited by the crowd. This couple made 3rd place British Rising Stars Latin and last 24 of the Open British Latin at Blackpool 2000.
- Anthony Finch-Marshall & Cushla Edwards (Sydney)
2nd in N.Z Professional Latin, I thought their performance was very good and they competed very porfessionally. A big improvement this year.
- Stefan Green & Helen Candy (Auckland)
I am a big fan of this couple so far as their creatifity, enthusiasm, talent and presentation. However, attention to the basics including footwork and character of each dance is essential to reach the top. Dancing 2-3 bars to a pose throughout destroys the connectivity of the dance. Link your creative highlights with more of the dance and you will go far in competition.
- Richard & Natalie Perry (Sydney)
1st N.Z. Professional Standard Made the last 48 of the British Rising Stars Standard 2000. A very smooth and calm performance, use of music was appealling. Training in England is paying off. However now try to show more emotion and feeling and to draw the judges and crowd to you with more shaping.
- Graeme & Michelle Davidsen (Auckland) 2nd N.Z. Professional Standard. Showed great feeling and flair. Moved well and pushed hard for the top place. This was a positive and pleasing performance.
- Stuart Perry & Kornelia Treskonova (Melbourne) 1st N.Z. A grade Standard & 1st N.Z. Selection to World Standard 2000
Moved well, covered the floor had good floorcraft. Kornelia's dresses were beautiful. I have a problem accepting the silhouette of this couple. The mans arms are too low and do not remain consistent in the dance. Foot and leg tracking problems appear to often for both man and lady. However experience and performance took them through.
- Harley Baas & Samantha Hitchcock (Nelson) 1st N.Z. B grade Standard 2nd N.Z. A grade Standard
A young couple who moved with class and confidence; kept character of dance intact with lovely shaping. My choice as couple of the future. Perhaps a little highh at times. Their musicality was outstanding.
- Peter & Jodeen Wales (Auckland) 1st N.Z. A & B grade Latin & N.Z. Selection World Latin 2000
Very impressed with this couple's attention to every detail of dress, presentation and style. Very slick and almost professional performance. Worthy winners, perhaps a little more of the basic linkages of each dance could be utilised.
- Carey & Joanne Saunders(Nelson) 1st N.Z Senior Standard & Senior N.Z. Selection Worlds Senior Standard 2000
A consistent performance and deserved their wins, perhaps both man and lady need to develop body positions and use greater peripheral vision to improve floorcraft. Explore ways of avoiding collisions
